Chapter Twenty-Four

“The things I do for the Light.” I combed my fingers through what was left of my hair. “Hundreds of years I’ve had long hair.”

Belle bent over her phone, and in the next second mine scooted across the dresser.

BELLE: Very cute.

I huffed. I was more than four centuries old, and a nineteen-year-old telling me I looked cute had my face heating up like a horny teenager. I leaned on the dresser, so close to the mirror my dark eye color blurred into a chocolate smudge.

Short blond hair. Never in my old mind had I thought I’d have blond hair.

Warm hands encircled me from behind, fingers lacing together above the button on my jeans. I wasn’t wearing a shirt, so Belle’s body triggered a fire beneath my skin where her chin connected with my back.

I normally liked silence, but I craved her voice so much. Wanted to hear her tell me about every detail of her day. Say my name.

Something.

A door shut, signaling Durk’s return with firewood. Unlike me, he didn’t mind cutting his hair short and dying it black. Always the rebel wanting to change things. I craned my neck to see Belle’s new looks.

We’d cut her long auburn hair to right above her shoulders and colored it charcoal. It was barely long enough to be pulled back in a braid or ponytail anymore.

I wasn’t convinced it was worth it. But we needed to stay in town, at least nearby, to locate Rain. She was still our assignment. And we never failed to complete an assignment. These new disguises would at least allow us a short window of anonymity. Paired with the decision to not all three go out together.

Belle nodded as if asking if I was all right.

“I’m fine. You hungry?”

She shook her head.

“Tired?”

Another head shake. I turned fully around and hitched my hip against the dresser, but kept her close. The small room barely had space for the queen-sized bed, dresser, and one solitary chair beside the door. A two-pane window offered a view of the trees. Thicket so dense the setting sun barely trickled between the leaves.

Belle hadn’t been mistaken about the anonymity of this place. It took three tries to find the turn. Weeds and grass overtook the driveway and porch.

“This was your dad’s?”

She leaned back and texted.

BELLE: Dad’s brother’s. Abandoned years ago. Safe here.

“As long as your detector doesn’t get distracted.” I swept my lips along her forehead.

Her face went pink, and she typed on her phone.

Durk pounded the door, then poked his head into the room. “You good?”

“I am. You?”

“Yeah. Fire’s crackling, should warm up in here shortly. I blessed the place even though the last time didn’t work. And I set some traps around the perimeter, though I’m not sure how anyone would get through all the trees and weeds.” He leaned on the doorframe. “This place is perfect.”

“Let’s hope.”

“Halli texted me Rain’s picture. She found one from when she stayed with them. I’ll forward it to you.”

“Good work.” I reached for my shirt from the dresser.
